  • OpenSUSE News: FOSDEM OpenSUSE.org devroom recordings
"This year Juergen and me (tom) went to FOSDEM to do the video recordings of the talks in the openSUSE developer room. Last year we had some problems with the sound quality, so this year we brought some more equipment, amongst others 2 head mics for the speakers, one mic for the audience, an 8 channel mixer and speakers for the audience."
  • Joe Brockmeier: At Southern California Linux Expo this weekend
"If you happen to be in the Los Angeles (or nearby) area, you don’t want to miss the Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE) this weekend. SCALE goes three days — Friday is mini-conferences (including Open Software Source in Education, and Women in Open Source) and Saturday and Sunday are the main conference days."
  • Andrew Wafaa: Ciao For Now And Bonne Chance Amigos
"This is just a quick little message to all those fine people who have finished working for SuSE/SUSE/Novell today. As far as I'm aware there were about 20 fine, hard working, knowledgeable and extremely friendly people that have unfortunately been bitten by the apparent global recession :-( . I was lucky and privileged enough to have met a large portion of the SUSE staff in Nuremberg last summer during HackWeek III."
  • Stanislav Visnovsky: How developers see openSUSE
"We’ve met on a raining winter Friday 3 weeks ago to collect the openSUSE issues as well as things that people consider to be good about openSUSE. The result of the hours-long discussion is a list of positive and negative things about openSUSE."
  • Lukas Ocilka: How Can Community Influence openSUSE
"You have probably seen Stano's blog post How developers see openSUSE. That post gives some details about our BrainStorming in Prague and points to the result of it - Lots of pluses and minuses of openSUSE which are open for extension, discussions, and contribution. ..."

  • Scott Morris: Linux Tool Resurrects Deleted Images
"In Linux, it’s a little more difficult to recover deleted files than in Win32 platforms. Some may argue that this is not the case, but for your regular old non-techie email-and-Internet user, I’d venture to guess that it is. That, and I’m always right (Raise your hand if you think I actually believe this. Brett, put your hand down.)."

New/Updated Applications @ OpenSUSE

OWN-oxygen-New-Updated-Apps.png

  • SuSEgeek: pngcrush - PNG optimizer utility in openSUSE
"pngcrush is an optimizer tool for PNG (Portable Network graphic) files. pngcrush is an excellent batch-mode compression utility for PNG images. Depending on the application that created the original PNGs, it can improve the file size anywhere from a few percent to 40% or more (completely losslessly)... Available in Packman Repo"
  • SuSEgeek: IPTraf - Console based IP Traffic Monitor in openSUSE
"IPTraf is a console-based network statistics utility for Linux. It gathers a variety of figures such as TCP connection packet and byte counts, interface statistics and activity indicators, TCP/UDP... It's available in Standard Repo suse-oss"
  • Deluge: Torrent Client Version 1.1.3
"Deluge is a lightweight yet full featured torrent client including blocklists, full stream encryption, web UI and others. You can find the latest 1.1.3 version here (use the 1.1.3 version)"

Planeta SUSE

OWN-Planet-SUSE.png
  • Lluis Sanchez: MonoDevelop 2.0 beta 1
"Yet another step towards 2.0 release. We released Beta 1 last week with many fixes and some new interesting features (here are the release notes). The one I like more is the support for per-project policies. This feature has been planned for long time but other work has been delaying it. Me and Michael Hutchinson had a chance to talk quite a lot about it while I was at Boston a couple of months ago. The policies model allows setting properties at global, solution, folder and project levels. Settings such as tab width can be defined in any of those levels and will cascade down to the lower levels (where it can be overriden if required). Many settings are already available in this way, and many more will be in future releases."
  • Miguel de Icaza: Mono Runtime Debugging
"We now have better integration of GDB with Mono. Information on how to use this is in Debugging with GDB in XDEBUG mode in our wiki. This will be useful if you are debugging the Mono runtime, or debugging Mono embedded into an application new versions of Mono (for example debugging Moonlight). ..."

  • Ken Yap: tip: leaving the install ISO "in drive"
"If you installed from DVD and you have the ISO image handy on disk, you might want to substitute the ISO image for the DVD in the repo list. Forums member ken_yap shows you how to achieve this to save bandwidth."
  • Easgs: Multimedia pack portable for openSUSE 11.1 32 bit
"Forums member Easgs created a Multimedia Pack portable for OpenSUSE 11.1 32 bit. This is especially useful if you have no internet at home and want to install a fully preconfigured multimedia setup for openSUSE 11.1 including all dependencies in no time."
  • Jonathan_R: Getting YaST to read your own community repos
"Forums member Jonathan_R explains the principles behind the community repos in Yast. Now you can make use of this knowledge to adjust the provided repository list to your personal preferences."

  • ExtremeTech: OpenSUSE 11.1 Review
"It's been quite a while since I've played with openSUSE. Back in the day it was pretty much my favorite Linux distribution. Oh sure I flirted with other distros and I enjoyed using them, but openSUSE always had its own special appeal. As a result, I couldn't resist downloading openSUSE 11.1 and giving it a shot."
  • eWeek: OpenSUSE 11.1 Vies for Desktop Linux Supremacy
"Novell's OpenSUSE 11.1 hit the Web late last year packed with desktop-friendly features, an impressive strategy for tapping community involvement, and more than a few rough spots. Novell is hoping those new features will help OpenSUSE against the likes of Red Hat Fedora and Ubuntu from Canonical."
  • It's A Binary World 2.0: Review: openSuse 11.1
"After reading through LXF, I tried loading openSuse 11.1 with the failsafe settings and it worked in VirtualBox. So I’ll now be reviewing openSuse 11.1."
